Daily Summary for Thursday 9/3: Today in class we: Continued Icebreakers, Science-Style! We discussed the current event from yesterday and work on a data collection activity with M&Ms that got you meeting new people. Homework: Current event article, 'A Strange New Way to Solve Crimes' (attached below) and do the following: 1) Create a short paragraph summary of the article's content and 2) agree or disagree with the following statement; 'Analyzing crime scene bacteria is the future of forensics' and explain using evidence from the article.

Daily Summary for Friday 9/4: Today in class we: Briefly discussed the bacterial forensics article. Next, we discussed class policies and began our short unit on Biostatistics. In the packet we worked through page 2 and just the range on page 3. If you were absent, see the attached data from third period to help you with the calculations. We ended class by handing out textbooks.hooray!

Homework: Please complete the following--Textbook Intro. Assignment 1) Read the 'Letter to the AP Student' on p. Write down any tips that might help you in AP class this year. 2) Look over the AP Biology Curriculum Framework (pages ix-xiii)--these are the topics we will discuss this year. Create a T-chart with 2 columns and title them: already know & need to study.

Skim through the topics within each 'Big Idea' (example: Big Idea 1 is about Natural Selection, Phylogenetics, Speciation, & Origins of Life). Place each topic into 1 of the 2 columns you've created. Add a star (*) next to the 2 topics that you are most interested in studying this year. Daily Summary for Tuesday 9/8: Today in class: We muscled our way through an introduction to standard deviation! We watched the attached 'Bozeman' biology video and calculated the sample calculation at the end. Next, we calculated standard deviation for the heart rate data from Friday. In 3rd period we calculated the 'girls' data and in 5th period we calculated the 'guys' data.

Homework: Complete the second heart rate standard deviation number. For 3rd period--complete the calculation for guys. For 5th period--complete the calculation for girls. Daily Summary for Wednesday 9/9: Today in class: We checked the homework calculation and then collected a new set of data for analysis. Today's data collection was for 'Drops on a Penny' in which we performed 3+ trials with water and some other liquid and then calculated standard deviation for both using the class data that is included in the attachment below.

Homework: Finish the standard deviation calculations from class (if incomplete) and practice the Question, Hypothesis & Null Hypothesis writing described on p. 4 of the statistics packet.

(Note: the work to complete is on p. 5 of the packet.). Daily Summary for Thursday 9/10: Today in class: We discussed the AWESOME opportunity that AP Bio students have to join the 'AP Connect' program for math and science Advanced Placement classes. If you are interested in being a part of this--copy and paste the link below to register.

I will have copies of the materials you need to get signed in class soon. Next: we practiced 'T-Tests of Significance' Homework: Sign up for the AP Connect program (optional, but encouraged) and complete 1 additional T-Test Problem. 3rd period--complete the 'Example Problem' at the bottom of packet page 7. 5th period--complete a T-test for the drops on a penny lab. Daily Summary for Monday 9/14: In class we: Discussed the homework problems (an answer key will be posted shortly!) Next, we began our short unit on Chemistry for AP biology students by discussing key properties of water. The top 8 properties of water are: 1) Water is a Polar Molecule, 2) water forms hydrogen bonds, 3) Cohesion/Adhesion/Surface Tension, 4) Water as a solvent, 5) Water's high specific heat, 6) Evaporative Cooling, 7) Ice Floats, and 8) Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic interactions.

We made whiteboards about these topics and shared them with each other..sharing will be completed tomorrow. Homework: 1) Skim over the Chapter 2 Review on p. 38-top of 39. Look for topics you feel less confident about. Create a review guide for yourself of at least 3 topics/vocabulary terms, but no more than 10 topics. (For example: a review of atom structure might include a labeled diagram) 2) Put yourself in a good place to be ready for tomorrow (review the classwork from Friday, finish any incomplete practice problems, work on the optional practice review that's attached if you want more practice, etc.).

Summary for Wednesday 9/16: In class we: Discussed the long term goal of working towards the AP exam and how the class centers around the '4 Big Ideas'. Next, we teamed up and worked on building 3D models of the molecules of life (including sugars and amino acids) and got stamped off along the way to show that we had it down.
